Chair reports on meetings with Fr. Paul
1. Redemptoris Sacramentum:
Fr. Paul will tell us when to begin implementation.
2. Hymnal:
Fr. Paul believes that the selection of the new hymnal should reflect the current types of music groups present at Saint Vivian (i.e.-ensemble, choir) and accounting for the groups needs in the future. The members of Worship Commission, expanded this idea that the selection of a new hymnal should include the input of Music Ministry and also input from Worship Commission and PPC .
3. Youth:
There was a discussion about whether or not the individuals who are planning/organizing the Fifth Sunday liturgies should communicate their ideas to Worship Commission. It was suggested that maybe the planning/organizing committee for the Fifth Sunday liturgies should join Worship Committee at our next meeting in order to discuss their ideas.
New Hymnal/Worship Aid subcommittee report:
The subcommittee presented a detailed report of three different hymnals they thought would be most appropriate for the parish. The main goal in selecting a new hymnal is to choose one which will promote participation of the congregation in singing/worshiping at mass. The subcommittee recommended Gather Comprehensive Second Edition from GIA Publications over the other two hymnals published by Oregon Catholic Press and World Library Publications. The Worship Commission unanimously approved of Gather Comprehensive Second Edition as the new hymnal for the parish. This hymnal contains much of the repertoire which members of the parish have been hearing/singing in Gather and Worship (our current hymnals) as well as a variety of new pieces of music.
Advent/Christmas Liturgy Planning Team report:
The team reported several ideas to implement during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. There was an idea of having a banner containing a different word for each Sunday of Advent in the processional. There was also an idea, which has been implemented in the past, that members of the congregation should be asked at each mass to come up and light the appropriate candle on the Advent wreath for that particular Sunday. There was a suggestion of adding more and more ÒgreenÓ to the altar as the season of Advent progresses into Christmas. Fr. Paul's input is needed before any implementation begins.
New Business
There was a discussion regarding the 8:15 am Mass on Holy Days. A member of Worship Commission brought up the point that, since the school children attend this Mass, there is not much room left for the adults who wish to attend Mass at this time. It was reported that many adults came in (on All Saints Day), saw how crowded the church was, and left. There was then a discussion about how to solve this problem. It was suggested that additional chairs be placed in different areas of the church as long as the fire exits are not blocked or violated. Another suggestion was to open up the choir loft if necessary. The last resort would be to put a fourth Mass back into the Holy Day schedule.
Understanding how we perform liturgical ministries:
The Introduction of the Order of Mass reference book was given to each member of Worship Commission for their use. This may be a future education topic for the future.
Discussion of Parish Pastoral Council "Lines of Communication":
Worship Commission wishes to remain in the loop of all communication regarding worship. This includes communication regarding the new Fifth Sunday mass.
The discussion of Fifth Sunday mass communication to Worship Commission was tabled.
Next Meeting
The next meeting is Monday, December 12, 2005 at 7:00 pm in the Saint Clare room.
For this meeting, read chapter 3 of Dies Domini. Jack Baker will begin this meeting with prayer.
