St. Vivian Online Discussion Forum: On becoming a Catholic - or not!

[ Return To Topics Page | Add A Comment To This Thread ]

Thread initiated by buchas on 9/25/03.

In today's world, where bishops do not seem to understand the concerns of the people, where sex scandals taint the priesthood, where parishioners have a hard time relating their daily lives to what the church is teaching, why, on earth, should anyone want to become a Catholic? I would be interested in your answer to this question?

I am also interested in anything you might like to discuss on any topic. Feel free to suggest a topic or join in if we can get a discussion going.

Live as I have tought you to live. You do not need to put a label on it.

Why on earth should anyone want to be Catholic? I don't know why either. I guess that there is just that little bit of hope in me that says maybe, just maybe, things can change. I love what my religion stands for, just not what the people do sometimes. It is old-fashioned in many ways and needs improvement in serving the needs of the parishioners. Personally I am very disgusted with the way things have been handled by our archbishop and I wish that we had a choice as far as term limitations for the job, and who is going to be in that position.

Being "Catholic" is far less important than living and following the teachings of Jesus. If one is so cought up in just being part of a group, such as the Catholic faith, it is far too easy to exclude those around them that may not be Catholic, as being inferior or having no real value. Many people live their lives as God has tought us to live. It is this "living the faith" that carries more value than the name of the group we put on it. Be proud to be Catholic, but do not feel that God is so closed minded enough to be so exclusive of one group. Live out of the box. "Love thy neighbor."

The church is not a democracy. It simply isn't, and no wishing is going to
make it so. There are higher ups that tell us how liturgy is to be done,
and all this is in flux right now. The bishops are going more conservative
and higher quality with the music. They are working on tighter guideliness
right now. It really doesn't matter if you personally like praise and
worship, since, well, we don't get to vote on this. I would like it if
there were a better balance of music at St. Vivian's. I'm always surprised
by the lack of traditional music at the children's masses. Of course, my
children hear it from me at St. Martin's, but I feel the other children are
really missing out on an important part of Catholic heritage.
