St. Vivian Parish Pastoral Council Meeting

September 27, 2004

Members present:

Paul Hess, Teresa Besl, Kathy Humbert, Fran Vanarsdall-Schwartz, Kathy Rothschild, Fr. Paul Gebhardt, Star Vondrell, Cindy Engelhardt, John Hadden, Dave Nichols, Lisa Brackman, Vivian Wagner and Amy Hagedorn

Appointed Position:

Fr. Paul would like to wait until he gets to know the people of the parish better before he appoints a replacement for Tom Bove (maybe 2 months or so).

Calendar:

No December meeting

No meeting on Easter Monday in March, 2005 - maybe meet week before or in April instead, or not meet at all

No May, 2005 meeting

We will meet the first week in June, 2005

John will send out a potential calendar out for review before 10/25/04 meeting.

Recording Secretary:

John said he talked to Mary Ellen Smith and she agreed to be our new recording secretary. Kathy Humbert made the motion to have Mary Ellen Smith as our new recording secretary and Star Vondrell seconded the motion.

By-Laws:

Revisit membership Article 5-Section 2-should all members of PPC be Catholic? Make our rules the same as Education Commission? Kathy Rothschild will get a copy of the Education Commission By-Laws to John. We will try to make this official in October, 2004.

Vice President:

There was an offer of a Dual-Headed Vice President position. Fr. Paul suggested that this was not a good way to go. It would complicate the presidency for the following year.

Could we have another person be Vice-President and John stay President for two (2) years?

Could those going out in 2007 be Vice-President for two (2) years?

Constitution does not state that the Vice-President this year must be Pres. the following year.

Teresa B. said she would be willing to be Vice-President . this year but prefers not to be President next year. There was a motion for Theresa Besl to be Vice President and there was a 2nd motion. It was unanimous.

Future (John):

What are we going to do? What do we need to do? What are the perceptions of the PPC in the Parish and what does PPC have to do with the re-building of St. Vivian? John: revisit pulse of parish and let people know that this survey would be different and what happened with the last survey. Fr. Paul: would like input from parish to get 5, 10, 15 year plan.

Survey Parish Committee:

Star, Dave, Cindy, Lisa, Vivian, Amy, and maybe Tim McManus to get together for survey committee. Fr Paul would like to see a survey which looks at people's priorities for our parish. In order for it to be as inclusive as possible, we will be looking to the groups/organizations of the parish to help provide input. There is not a rush to start the survey because the parish is still healing. We will let people know when the survey is coming and it will probably be after the holidays.

Other group involvement in survey: We could send survey to other groups such as PTA, Boy Scouts, Boosters, etc. to get their input/response.

Future of Pastors:

Fr. Paul stated that the future of pastors is that they will be sharing parishes. Parishes are working closer to prepare for the transition and St. Vivian is taking a role in this.

Liaisons to Commissions:

John explained that each PPC member was a liaison to call different commissions to get input. This was somewhat dropped last year. We should re-invent this, but will we report every month or have one commission report per month? Kathy Rothschild suggested that we update the Committee Head Liaisons and call our Committee and let them know that we are in a new year & ask if they have any questions or input. Kathy will send an updated Liaison list via e-mail before the October meeting. Maybe we could go to one of their meetings during the year. Fran suggested that we call our group before the October meeting and introduce ourselves as their liaison. John said that we don't have a "doing" plan for this year so contacting the different organizations is good.

It was decided that everyone should contact their organization and report back at the October, 2004 meeting.

Kathy Rothschild Financial Statement:

Financial Statement for past fiscal year will be in the bulletin the weekend of 10/03/04. Collections down $90,000.00 - $100,000.00 for the calendar year ($60,000.00 for fiscal year). Parish enrollment is technically not down. Diocese gets 5.7% of church income - 3.8% of total income. Fr. Paul believes that we need to live within our means.

Stewardship Sunday:

October 17, 2004 - Fr. Paul

Stewardship:

Tom Bove will talk about stewardship at masses.

Pastoral Associate:

We did not hire a Pastoral Associate and that is one reason we are not deeper in debt.

School Enrollment:

Enrollment in our school is down about 18 students ($41,000.00). Jean Margello is in charge of Open House for any new students. We all need to get the word out that we are strong and stable to help up school/parish enrollment.

Letter from Archbishop:

Fr. Paul said he received a letter from the Archbishop stating that "yes" some of Fr. Kroeger's language to children was in violation of the Child Protection Decree. On October 8, 2004 there will be a Children's Mass by the Archbishop to show children that he understands. Fr. Paul will send out letter (bulletin) regarding this.

Suggestion Box:

Fran Vanarsdall-Schwartz stated that there was one(1) message in the box and it was a letter from a person who was upset with Fr. Kroeger leaving (it was unsigned and could not be responded to).

New Pastor:

Fr. Paul announced that he received a letter from Bishop Moeddel stating that he will officially be Pastor of St. Vivian Parish on November 28, 2004.

Next meeting: October 25, 2004 7:00 p.m.

Adjourned meeting and ended meeting with the Our Father.

Respectfully submitted: Cindy Engelhardt
