The celebration for Fr. Jack went well.
6) GENERAL BUSINESS
a) Jean Merz gave a brief summary of the Everybody Counts program which will take place the week of October 23rd. Parent volunteers are still needed. Maria Meyer will put together a list of follow-up speakers that can be used by the volunteers to enhance their program.b) Fran Vanarsdall will be taking over as chairperson of Market Day. She is looking for at least one other person to chair the program with her. She was heartily thanked for stepping forward to take over this worthwhile program.
c) The Innisbrook gift wrap sale began on September 11 and will conclude on September 25th. The sale is progressing well.
d) A vote was taken and it was decided to suspend the Piles of Pennies program due to waning interest.
e) The Putt-Putt at the Parish Picnic was awell attended. However, it was recommended that in the future the game not open before 2 p.m. due to a lack of players before that time.
7) NEW BUSINESS
a) Laura Kalas is in charge of the school directories this year. She is expecting a mid-October delivery.b) The PTA Help Wanted results were shared with the appropriate chairpersons. It was stressed that every person who responded to the letters should be contacted, even if enough volunteers were already recruited for that event.
c) The amount of PTA dues returned is higher than the amount returned last year. Approximately $920 has been collected.
d) The Pancake Breakfast is planned for December 3rd, 2000. Joy Gunza said she knows of someone who would be a great Santa if another one is needed.
e) Planning for the PTA Christmas Tree is going well.
f) The Santa Shop will continue this year. Suzanne Cajacob suggested selling something different at the Santa Shop. She knows of a place that makes wood ornaments that will add the name or logo of the school. It was suggested that perhaps we could sell them seperately from the Santa Shop. It will be looked into.
g) The date of the Ice Cream Social has to be changed because the original date is during Holy Week. It was suggested that we hold the event at a different time of year, such as January or February, when there isn't as much going on and perhaps more people would attend. It is being considered.
h) Joy Gunza presented some ideas of how the PTA could reach out to our school communtity and promote all of the benefits the PTA provides to both parents and students. She suggested holding two seminars, one this Fall and one in the Spring. The first would feature a Homework Specialist who would provide parents with practical advice on improving our children's homework skills. A police officer who specializes in internet safety would conduct the second. Joy also discussed the possibility of forming an Academic Boosters, who's purpose would be to promote academic competition among our students, and perhaps with other schools. She will keep us updated on the progress of these ideas.
8) OTHER BUSINESS
It was suggested that the PTA isn't doing enough to reach out to the parents of our school and to encourage more diverse involvement. It was agreed that more has to be done. We decided to set up a table at the Open House on Thursday, September 28, making our organization visible and accessible to the parents of our school should they have any questions or comments concerning any of our programs or events.
9) ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
NEXT MEETING - October 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Ursuline room. (The old convent.)
Respectfully submitted,
Amy Zust
