 Announcements from Darrin

Amy Hagedorn contacted the Education Commission and asked if we would host a donut Sunday. The date would be determined later. The commission voted and approved our participation.

A representative from the Education Commission is needed for the Temporal Affairs committee, which meets monthly. Martha volunteered to be the representative.

Darrin announced the following meeting dates for 2004 - 05: November 18, January 20, March 17, May 17 and June 16. No problems were seen with these dates and they were approved.

Jean distributed the new staff list. Bridgett Raffenberg has returned as our Technology coordinator and Bill Hoffbauer is our new music and band director.

Jean reported that enrollment is currently at 404 total with 364 in grades K-8. She also distributed copies of St. Vivian's professional development plan. A parent satisfaction survey will be distributed to parents some time in October. This will be scored by Xavier University and the results will be returned to the commission

The Terra Nova tests will be given to grades 2, 4, 6 and 8 in October. It is a test of achievement and I.Q/ability. The results are usually reported by Christmas. St. Vivian students traditionally have high scores. Maria suggested that we communicate this in some way as a form of positive public relations for the school.

Jean distributed the Archdiocesan handbook describing its policy towards recruitment. The policy, if followed, prohibits St. Vivian from contacting out-of-district schools. Students may only shadow in its district school. No school other than Roger Bacon may recruit during the regular school day. St Vivian may not list in the bulletin its parishioners who are on honor rolls from out-of-district schools. Commission members expressed concern that the policy book was misleading. It appears on the surface to be geared towards athletes but is actually addressed to any student. There was dissatisfaction with several parts of the policy.

High school night will be held on Tuesday, October 12 at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. Roger Bacon will address all the parents and then the parents are free to go to classrooms to talk to the representatives of their choice from the other high schools.

The technology committee has been revived. Kevin Martin is in charge of re-wiring the building. They plan to meet September 22 at 7:00 in the faculty room. The building is being rewired for internet and a new phone system. Auxiliary services are paying for some new computers.

The science lab has been reestablished and refurbished. Mary Doyle and Steve Glassmeyer are applying for a grant to better equip the lab.

The faculty will attend a religious in-service at St. Matthias on September 24.

As part of the Child Protection Decree, we are asking all groups to submit their volunteer list 2 weeks ahead of time.

As a result of a situation that occurred on the first day of school, we will be adopting the Archdiocesan policy that deals with searches of students' bags and lockers. It will be put into next year's handbook.

Old Business

The public address system in the P.A.C was fixed in May.

New Business

Jim, Kim and Darrin and Tony will meet to review the school's crisis plan. They will meet October 14.

There is a need to change the constitution and by-laws to formally define the role of new members to the commission at the June meeting. Outgoing members will be allowed to vote. New members will be introduced at the meeting, but will not vote.

Martha voiced a concern that there seems to be a lack of focus on adult faith formation at the Education commission meetings. Maria asked for a calendar of events for youth, R.C.I.A., high school students and adults of the parish. Darrin said that he's send out a request to Jodi Bender.

Announcements

The next Education Commission meeting will be held on Thursday, November 18.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Dick Klus and Maria Meyer seconded it.

Respectfully submitted by Joan Haber
