There was a nice spot on Channel 5 news and articles in the local papers. All the religion teachers at St. Vivian have been certified to teach religion by the diocesan Religious Education office.
The new St. Vivian cookbooks will be available in November and will be sold after weekend mass for $10. The proceeds will benefit the Youth Ministry program and go toward the purchase a new computer.
Principal - Bill Cavanaugh
The accreditation committee completed the in school visit on October 17 and 18. They were pleased with the students and staff good behavior and attentiveness. The paper work for accreditation will be finalized and sent to Columbus. We should receive accreditation by the spring.A card of congratulations was signed by the members of the education commission and sent to the teachers and staff with thanks and congratulations of a job well done.
Bridget Raffenberg has started to help in the computer lab. All grades will come to lab once a week and the junior high may be able to take advantage of the lab twice a week.
Discussion about computers and technology continued about schools that are going wireless. Bill and Joe know of some schools that have gone to wireless and some that have ports for students use. Cost is high for both technologies.
Mr. Cavanaugh handed out copies of the school crisis and emergency response plan to the commission members. Much of the plan outlines procedures for storms, tornados and fire. Communication is a big part of the crisis plan. There is a need to improve the communication between the junior high and the school office. Mr. Cavanaugh is working with the police to improve the crisis plan and maybe to do things like mark school windows and to check to see if the police have a school building plan.
Mr. Cavanaugh would like to have someone available to answer the phone in the school office during school hours.
Notes from school will be sent home on Friday.
Conferences with teachers and parents will be Thursday November 8 and Tuesday November 20. There will be ten minutes for each appointment
Discussion was continued as to the ten-minute time allotment. As discussed last year, Ann and Joe asked if the ten-minute conference time could be increased to fifteen minutes. Mrs. Renken noted that the teachers are happy to meet with parents another time or call them on the phone to be able to spend more time. It is hard to fit the number of parents who wish to come in the time available.
Mrs. Renken also suggested adding a list of questions and ideas about students and teachers for parents to think about to help them better prepared for their conference. The parent help guild could be added to the Parent Teacher conference letter that the school sends home.
The religion teachers are helping the children become more aware of our changing world and the more diverse world they live in. They also are discussing different religious beliefs to help the children become more familiar with our multicultural society.
VIII. Unfinished Business
Strategic PlanningThere is a need to address long-range planning for the future of the school and parish. Father said there is small committee that is starting to work on ideas.Jodie said St. Vivian has 41 PSR students from K - 8 grades and 11 to 12 in the junior high.
The effect of the local school district on parish schools was discussed. It makes a difference what school district the parish is in. Joe reminded us that on election day Tuesday November 6 there is a Finneytown school levy. Fr. Jack said the parish and the dioceses are in favor of the Finneytown school levy passing. The education commission members also were unanimously in favor of the school levy passing.
IX. Liaisons:
Ann mentioned there was a PTA meeting last night. She will pass along the minutes when she gets themAnita said there are four RCIA candidates this year. And they are a knowledgeable group who ask lots of questions.
Mr. Cavanaugh would like to review the discipline part of the handbook.
He is concerned with the point system effectiveness and the amount of paperwork that this policy generates.
Mrs. Renken said the junior high teachers have met with Mr. Cavanaugh to discuss the schools discipline policy. This year the junior high teachers have more strongly enforced the discipline policy and feel good knowing they have the principal's support.
Mr. Cavanaugh would like to strengthen and improve the schools discipline policy and asked the commission members to give him other schools policies and tell him if they work well or not by before the next meeting.
Jodie related that the PSR handbook would be ready soon. Lois Neltner is helping with editing.
X. New Business
