Pastoral Associate - Bill Lonneman

Bill sent a report earlier to the Education Commission members, which is added at the end of this report. Members were appreciative of his report and of his efforts to regularly communicate with the Commission and to work on behalf of the parish.

Director of Youth Ministry /Religious Education - Jodie Bender

School Report - Bill Cavanaugh

Bullying
Mr. Cavanaugh has talked with Dr. Ponti and others to help get a program started for the students about bullying. Mr. Cavanaugh plans to start the Bully Busters program the first week of April. The program takes one class period and will start with the fourth grade and proceed to the other grades. Handouts are given to the students and families.

Staff Change

Two staff members are leaving at the end of the year. Mr. Ralston who is the eighth grade social studies teacher would like a full time position but there is not one available now so a new teacher will be hired.

Marianne Hodapp is leaving her position with the pre-school.

Enrollment

Enrollment for next year is 390 students at this time. Enrollment is 400 now.

Pre-school is full.

Discipline Policy

The discipline policy is working well. Mr. Cavanaugh sees an improvement in the discipline of the students in the junior high. Mr. Cavanaugh is still looking at the discipline policy and may need to make revisions. He wants to be able to use more discretion in administering the discipline policy. He did agree with the statement from last months meeting that read, "demerits are given per offense not per incident."

The academic points are being closely monitored. Mr. Cavanaugh does not think a Saturday school suspension helps the students who are struggling with schoolwork. This year there has been one Saturday school and that was for the behavior of a student.

Maria suggested that the teachers should be surveyed to find out what they like and dislike about the discipline policy.

Joe suggested that the commission allow time in the next meeting to review the discipline policy. Members were asked to send suggestions for needed changes to Mr. Cavanaugh well in advance of the May meeting.

Grants

Mrs. Eha and Mrs. Khamis wrote a grant for $750 for "Fiddler on the Roof.

The grant committee meets the first Monday of the month. Tim McManus has joined the committee.

Review of Crisis Response

Sergeant Pat Kramer the sixth grade DARE officer asked Mr. Cavanaugh for the schools evacuation plan, the school's crisis plan and a diagram of the school buildings so that its effectiveness could be evaluated.

Mr. Cavanaugh is working with Springfield Township Police to develop a Crisis Plan for St. Vivian. One suggestion was to put stickers on the windows to be able to tell what the room numbers are from outside.

After the break-in Kathy Rothschild, Mr. Cavanaugh and the police went through the school and church buildings to help find solutions for any security problems. A new security system is being looked into.

Some other suggestions made were to keep some lights on at night and shades open, and to lock school doors after school has been dismissed.

In connection with crisis management, Mr. Cavanaugh related that the staff handled telling the students about the death of Mr. Bob Junker very well. Teachers and staff were comforting and helpful. A prayer service was held at the end of the day, which was comforting for the staff, students and parents. An education fund has been set up for the Junker children at the 5th 3rd. bank.

Joan mentioned the Red Cross will help train school staff to help the school with a crisis and will pay for equipment and classes.

Maria mentioned she was working in the Princeton school district and they were sending a letter home to the parents about their school crisis plan, how it will work and what the parents should do in a time of crisis.

PTA

PTA approved ten thousand dollar for chairs in the sixth and seventh grades.

The PTA also is giving each teacher a two hundred gift to buy things they need for their class.

New PTA president is Lori Spinnenweber.

Computers

New computers keep coming. St. X high school, individuals, and companies have given some computers

Liaisons

Maria mentioned that FANS meets on Monday night. Fiddler on the Roof is May 16, 17, 18.

Lynne said the Athletic Boosters are giving a basket to the Bid and Buy booth and the Basket Booth for the festival. They are also going to donate to the education fund for the Junker's and the piano fund.

Unfinished Business

Joe reminded the members to please make the follow up phone calls to those who are nominated to run for Education Commission.

Joe discussed a letter he received from Bill Lonneman about the number of votes that a parishioner needs to run for Education Commission and Pastoral Parish Council. Bill was concerned with the amount of time spent tabulating the names and the time of year when the elections are held. The consensus of the members was that if a person got one nomination that was enough to ask them to run.

New Business

None.

Announcements

Next meeting is Thursday May 15 in the Ursuline Hall

Adjournment

Mark motioned, Joan seconded and all members were in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 pm.
