Reports
Pastoral Report - Father JackFather is in the process of selecting a group of about six to eight people from St. Vivian parish to work on a five to ten-year plan for the Parish, and School. Father, Joe and Bill Lonneman have met with members of other churches in the community to talk about their ideas for the future, as well as to coordinate efforts across parishes.Father and the Temporal Affairs Committee talked to the Development Director from St. Margaret of York to learn more about the duties of a development director in their parish.
Temporal Affairs - Michael Vilaboy
No Report
Pastoral Associate - Bill Lonneman
Bill was unable to attend the meeting but reported that a flyer will be in Sunday's bulletin with announcements.
Director of Youth Ministry /Religious Education - Jodie Bender
PSR HandbookJodie passed out copies of the first PSR handbook. The members of the commission approved the handbook and a note to this effect will be printed in the handbook. The handbook will be mailed out to the PSR families with registration forms.
Confirmation
The Confirmation packets have been sent out to the students and the families in the parish.
First Communion and Reconciliation
Letters were sent home or mailed to the PSR students who have completed the first grade to explain First Communion and Reconciliation schedule for next year. First Communion for 2003 will be the weekend after Easter, which is spring break. Father has told Jodie if anyone cannot make that date they may schedule another time.
Graduation Liturgy
Jodie said the graduation Liturgy went very well and Mr. Cavanaugh agreed. Jodie and Lisa Renken started planning early and added new awards.Medals were awarded to the eighth grade Eucharistic Ministers. Eight eighth graders were given a plaque to acknowledged their dedication for serving masses and funerals.
Maria suggested that the students who play or sing at the school masses with Mrs. Khamis be acknowledged at graduation next year. Jodie and Bill will consider her suggestion.
School Liturgies
Jodie has received good feedback about the school liturgies this year.School masses will be held on Friday next school year except when there is a holy day in the week. Each grade will attend mass or a prayer service three times a month. This may also be different because of holy days.
Father Jack would like the children to attend Stations of Cross twice and Reconciliation during Lent.
Youth Ministry
The youth group mission trip is June 23, 2002. The nail sale at St. Vivian raised one thousand dollars. There was also a nail sale at St. Bart's and another at Little Flower parish June 14 and 15. Jodie is hopeful that the money raised will pay for the transportation for the mission this summer.
Bible School
Vacation Bible School is the week of July 15, 2002. We are still in need of two teachers. Marie and Jodie mentioned that the older children need to call and arrange to help in order to get service hours, rather than just showing up.
School Report - Bill Cavanaugh
Maria thanked Mr. Cavanaugh for a good year, as did the rest of the Education Commission members.
School Schedule
Mr. Cavanaugh passed out next year's school schedule.Monday August 19 will be a mandatory meeting for parents. Mr. Cavanaugh has asked the PTA to help. Other groups such as the Athletic Boosters may be able to talk to the parents. Parents will also meet the teachers.
Hand book/ Dress code
Mr. Cavanaugh passed out a copy of the dress code policy to the members, which was sent home the last week of school.Mr. Cavanaugh also passed around the Lands End catalogue from which families may order the uniform. Lands End is comparable in price to Casson's
It was suggested that backless shoes be added to the list of shoes that are not to be worn to school
Lynne asked about the statement about socks, that the socks must be above the ankles. Lynne thought that was hard to enforce and it may be hard to find this kind of socks. Most members said they have bought socks that were above the ankle.
Discussion continued about younger children needing to wear belts. Some members felt that the younger children would rather cut off the belt loops than wear a belt. Other members also felt that the younger children in grades K-2 would have trouble changing for gym and going to the restroom with a belt. Mr. Cavanaugh said the schools his children attend all wear belts and he felt it would help with behavior and appearance. A note may need to be added to the dress code policy that belt loops on pants may not be cut off.
Discipline Policy
Much time during the meeting was devoted to discussion of the new discipline policy, which is comprised of two sections: one dealing with behavior and the other with academics. Academic points are accumulated on a quarterly basis, and conduct demerits are accumulated on a semester basis.Mark and Lynne were interested to know what effect this proposed new policy would have had on students last year. Would more students be in detention or on the verge of being expelled?
Concern was voiced about the Saturday detention and the amount of money that families are to be charged. Members felt that the teachers or supervisors needed to be compensated for their time but a few felt that $50 was too high. Other options were discussed such as having parents stay with their children at the Saturday detention and cutting the cost to $25 (two adults must be present to adhere to the Child Protection Decree). The Saturday detention will not be a study hall but a work time for the students.
Changes to the discipline policy were suggested to make the policy more consistent and a more logical progression with the points and demerits. Mr. Cavanaugh will E-mail the changes to members of the commission for comments and approval. All members were asked to check their e-mail and let Mr. Cavanaugh have their thoughts quickly and to copy Joe and other Commission members.
Members of the Commission discussed that the staff and teachers need to be consistent in the administration of the discipline policy. Jodie added that the teachers and staff have the responsibility to the school and the students to enforce the discipline policy.
Mr. Cavanaugh wants very much to reward the students who have good behavior and good academics to reinforce positive behavior.
